Activity Steps

1.Explore—7 minutes: Read a short, school-appropriate sequence from Dog Man. Identify what the words reveal, what the pictures reveal, and where readers speed up or pause.
2.Plan—5 minutes: Students invent a harmless Petey problem, such as hiding the Chief’s important papers. Choose one canine habit that will distract Dog Man or help him solve it.
3.Draft—12 minutes: Create a six-panel comic with a setup, problem, complication, and solution. Use pictures, brief captions, and speech bubbles for characters who speak; convey Dog Man’s responses through action and expression.
4.Experiment—8 minutes: On a separate strip, redraw one action as a single panel and then as three panels. Predict which version makes the action feel quicker and which builds anticipation.
5.Partner-read—8 minutes: Partners read each comic, point out a visual clue, and explain where they paused or hurried. Authors revise one panel or line based on the feedback.
6.Reflect—5 minutes: Share selected comics and complete the sentence, 'I controlled the pace by…' Connect the ending to Dog Man’s helpfulness or persistence.

In a Pace-Write-Read workshop, students notice a technique, try it in their own comics, and read their drafts with a partner to test its effect. Dog Man’s mix of police-officer responsibilities and dog instincts offers a useful model: a serious situation can turn comic when an unexpected canine reaction interrupts it. Breaking that reaction into several panels can build anticipation, while showing it in one panel can create a sudden surprise. Panel count alone does not determine pace; text length, visual complexity, and reader attention also matter. Plan—3 minutes: Invent a harmless Petey scheme, such as hiding the Chief’s hat, and choose a dog instinct that unexpectedly helps Dog Man locate it. Write and draw—7 minutes: Make two versions of the solution: a two-panel quick reveal and a four-panel buildup with a silent pause before the discovery. Keep the main events the same so timing is the variable being tested.
